About Me

Hey there, I'm Emma! I'm a freelance critic and consultant who has been writing about video games for over six years. Starting out as a gaming editor for university newspaper Redbrick, I joined Eurogamer as a reporter in 2018, before switching to freelance work in 2021. Since then I've been writing for clients such as Edge and GamesRadar, while also taking on game consultation work. This has ranged from writing mock reviews for indie projects, to helping AAA clients refine their game narratives. I'm known for my creative, humorous writing style and strong critical eye: I pride myself on being able to explain a game's strengths and weaknesses in a clear and constructive manner.

My journalism work has taken me all over the world, including to major events such as E3 and Gamescom, where I conducted interviews with high-profile names in the games industry. I have extensive public speaking experience, and have appeared on BBC World News and Sky News to discuss industry topics. In 2023 I was invited to be a juror for BAFTA Games' Family category, which was a huge honour and a career highlight.

At the University of Birmingham I studied Liberal Arts and Sciences, majoring in International Relations. It was a challenging degree course that required me to hop between many different subjects, including fantasy literature, Russian classical music, game studies and even Australian sports.

In my spare time I play plenty of football: I'm a member of local grassroots team Bishop's Cleeve FC, and last year I played in the FA Cup. I also write fiction, and recently had a short story selected for publication in an online magazine. On top of all that, I play piano to relax, and I'm sometimes even able to unwind with a few video games.
